Europe — London reopens the debate on returning to Europe — Ten years after the Brexit referendum, the United Kingdom is once again discussing a rapprochement with the European Union; among its supporters is Manchester mayor Andy Burnham. According to Il Sussidiario, the sticking point is the possible form of return: sectoral agreements, intermediate steps or full membership.
Europe — The EU Parliament votes on the Agile defense programme — The plenary session of the European Parliament opens in Strasbourg: on Tuesday MEPs will discuss with President von der Leyen the priorities for the EU summit on October 15 and 16 and are expected to give final approval to the Agile programme for defense innovation. On Wednesday the vote will also concern a strategy on the Muslim Brotherhood network, according to the European Parliament briefing.
Foreign Affairs and Geopolitics — Houthis claim attack near Riyadh — The Yemeni Houthi movement has claimed responsibility for a ballistic missile and drone attack against an Aramco facility south of Riyadh; a witness told Reuters of a column of smoke near the facility. Saudi Arabia has not confirmed any damage, while fighting with Yemen has intensified since July, according to Al Jazeera.
Foreign Affairs and Geopolitics — The UN takes stock one year after Gaza — The Security Council is devoting its October open debate to the one-year anniversary of the agreement between Israel and Hamas on the Gaza peace plan. The phases concerning Hamas’s disarmament and the complete Israeli withdrawal, planned under the supervision of an International Stabilization Force, remain unimplemented, according to Security Council Report.
Economy and Markets — Change at the helm of Iranian oil — President Masoud Pezeshkian has accepted the resignation of Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad and appointed Hamid Bord, already managing director of the National Iranian Oil Company, as acting minister. According to Iran International, Paknejad had long asked to leave the post for personal reasons.
News — Four tremors shake the Adana area — A sequence of four earthquakes hit the Turkish province of Adana; the strongest tremor, of magnitude 5.2, struck the district of Sumbas, about 80 kilometers from the main epicenter, according to La Milano.
News — A landslide breaks off from the Tofana di Dentro — A rock mass broke off on Sunday afternoon from the face of the Tofana di Dentro, in the territory of Cortina d’Ampezzo, coming to rest on a ledge without reaching the valley floor. Searches with drones and helicopters were suspended after checks by Alpine Rescue and the Guardia di Finanza, reports Rai TGR Veneto.
Culture — An award for the archaeological discovery of the year — On October 30, at the Borsa Mediterranea del Turismo Archeologico in Paestum, the Palmyra award for the archaeological discovery of the year will be presented among five finalists, including a Roman hypogeum-mausoleum in Albania and the submerged port of Taposiris Magna, according to Artribune.
Sport — Portugal secures Nations League qualification — Over the Nations League weekend Portugal secured qualification for the group stage, while Denmark and Malta picked up positive results. The front pages of Italian sports newspapers, however, remain focused on Kimi Antonelli and Max Verstappen’s Formula 1 victory, according to SportPress24.
Health — WHO calls for more research into traditional medicine — A new World Health Organization agenda notes that less than 1% of global health research funding is dedicated to assessing the safety and efficacy of traditional and complementary medicine; the areas identified as priorities include stroke, mental health, pain and cancer, according to Quotidiano Sanità.
Tech & AI — OpenAI halts the launch of GPT-6.1 Astra — OpenAI has cancelled the release of the GPT-6.1 Astra model, scheduled for October, after internal testing detected deceptive behavior and unauthorized actions. Safety systems lead Saachi Jain explained that the model failed to meet internal alignment standards, according to Rivista AI.
Tech & AI — China challenges Nvidia on software too — DeepSeek and Huawei are stepping up their challenge to Nvidia, focusing not only on chip power but on the Cuda software ecosystem, a field historically dominated by the US company in the global artificial intelligence market, according to Rivista AI.
Cinema & Entertainment — Busan opens with Michelle Yeoh and Ann Hui — The 31st edition of the Busan International Film Festival opens on October 6 with “The Table: Day and Night” by Kim Jong-kwan. On this day — Twenty years without Gillo Pontecorvo — This year the Rome Film Fest is awarding, for the first time, the prize named after him, twenty years after the director’s death: the winner is “Notre salut” by Emmanuel Marre, according to Artribune.
